Trophy Sauvignon Blanc
We are delighted that our Sauvignon Blanc 2005 has just been awarded the Champion Export Wine Trophy and Gold medal at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2006. This is the seventh consecutive vintage of Highfield Sauvignon Blanc to win gold, and the sixth trophy awarded to Highfield with Winemaker Alistair Soper at the helm. Alistair said “2005 was a great vintage in Marlborough with good flavours consistent in most vineyards. I had confidence this Sauvignon Blanc was one of our best from the very outset". Add this to the whopping 95 point rating Bob Campbell MW gave the Sauvignon Blanc in Gourmet Traveller WINE Feb/March issue and you come out with something very special. Alistair accepted the trophy on stage at the elegant black-tie evening in Auckland on 18 March 2006. Needless to say, there was much celebration going on and a fantastic night for us rural folk to be out in the big smoke.

Harvest 2006
Harvest seemed to creep up on us early this year with fruit being picked about two weeks ahead of usual. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes for the Elstree Cuvee Brut were picked on 6 and 7 March looking very clean and promising for another great sparkling. We have a passionate and dedicated vintage ‘cru’ again this year, exerting themselves around the clock for the love of fine wine. Luckily for them, our restaurant provides them with award winning cuisine and stunning wines every night for dinner. The small winemaking team of six are from as far afield as Spain, France and Chile.     
 
Devonport Wine & Food Festival
Highfield was there with Auckland wine distributor, Josie Graham and friends from Punchbowl Wines. We all had a super fun time, although I have a sneaking suspicion the punters enjoyed themselves more. The Auckland weather dished out a perfect sunny weekend and the beautiful Auckland harbour provided a lovely back drop whilst sipping good wine and indulging in the delicious food. Mark it in your diary for next year.
 
Art Exhibition
Works by Marlborough Artist Rick Edmonds will be showing at Highfield from 12 April for six weeks. The Marlborough Sounds and the sense of longing and of belonging, motivates Rick’s work. “There is nowhere else that so compels me”. His paintings are seascapes and stunning Marlborough Sounds statements with photo like crispness. Most original pieces will be sold at auction, with no reserve, at Highfield Estate late in May. At the restaurant & Cellar Door
Highfield’s talented Executive Chef Stefan Link treated us and a few lucky media to a sensational sneak preview of the French Oak Smoked Regal Marlborough Salmon and Sauvignon Blanc match. In February this year, Stefan’s team won Marlborough’s Wine and Food Festival Challenge for a Salmon and Sauvignon Blanc match. The award winning French Oak Smoked Salmon, accompanied by Trophy winning Highfield Sauvignon Blanc 2005 is a combination not to be missed. This special collaboration will be available for lunch at Highfield from 27 March 2006 as part of an entirely new autumn menu. The Cellar Door has recently received a makeover with a fresh lick of white paint and a few classic wooden cabinets brightening things up. On a less cheery note, we will sadly be saying goodbye to our Cellar Door Manager Jeremy Smith who leaves us to go back to the UK. He has done a fantastic job with Highfield for five years. Good luck Jez, we wish you all the very best.
