    Highfield Botrytised Riesling 2003

Hi everyone

 
We have just released our third ever, extremely limited and sensational sweet wine exclusively to cellar door and New Zealand mail order customers.
 
We are fortunate the 2003 Botrytised Riesling was made at all. The Riesling vines were planted in 2001 to complete an existing Riesling vineyard. The first crop off these young vines ripened later than the mature vines and they were not expected to get harvested at all. Food for the tiny birds suffering in the early autumn frosts.

 

However, the cool & dry end to the 2003 season produced perfect conditions for a dry botrytis on the super sweet grapes. This is also called “noble-rot”.  The botrytis anchors in the fragile Riesling grape-skin and causes the grapes to shrivel, leaving them with concentrated and intensely sweet juices. Botrytis has a particularly opulent flavour of its own and this is not the same as simpler late harvest characters. When fermented with the grape juice, Botrytis imparts a honey & apricot character to the Riesling, making an extremely complex and delicious combination giving succulence and longevity. We simply could not resist hand picking these glorious sweet, sticky grapes to make this truly unique and exceptional Botrytised Riesling. 
 
Highfield has previously made Botrytised Rieslings. Once in 1994, which won a trophy in the Sydney International Wine Competition and again in 1997.
 
The Highfield 2003 Botrytised Riesling shows intense flavours of honey and apricot. It has an incredibly sweet and luscious texture, which slips down like silk and promises to be perfect with whom ever you choose to share it. 
 
Stocks are low so to be fair, we ask you to limit purchases to two bottles.
 
Each bottle is personally signed and individually numbered by Winemaker, Alistair Soper.
