Recent Release Riesling – July 2005

Kia ora and Hello

We hope all you northern hemisphere dwellers are enjoying the sun while we’re suffering down here, mid winter and frosty in the south. Lucky for us we live in Marlborough, the sunniest region of New Zealand, so while the mornings are icy and crisp, the warming sun does come out most days.

We have this super wine offer exclusively for our Kiwi mail order and cellar door customers. The recent release bottle aged 2002 Highfield Riesling retails at $24 per bottle however, direct from the winery cellar, we’re offering New Zealand customers:

2002 Riesling                              $20 per bottle

2002 Riesling case of 12            $210 per case (just $17.50 per bottle)

Why Riesling?.............because we love it!
“Riesling, the greatest of the ‘aromatic’ white-wine varieties – is light in the mouth, basing its appeal on pure fruit flavours and full-bloomed bouquet. Most people know Riesling’s a good aperitif and goes well with food” Cuisine Magazine. Michael Cooper.

“If you believe, as I do that Riesling is inherently superior to Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, then Riesling is a bargain. With bottle age, it tends to lose its pronounced citrus fruit flavours and will develop mellow beeswax, honey and clove flavours” Cuisine Magazine. Bob Campbell MW.

Riesling typically is an excellent cellaring prospect, but Highfield has done much of the work for you already, by allowing the wine to age in bottle and develop those bottle aged characters before release. The Highfield 2002 Riesling is a finely textured dry wine with citrus and floral aromas leading to intense mineral and lime flavours. The wine has retained its youth with just a whisper of bottle aged character and is drinking very well now. However it will develop positively with further ageing of five to six years. The wine is well suited to fresh fish, vibrant salads and fragrant or moderately spicy cuisine.

2005 Vintage Report
“It now looks like being another good year for Marlborough, despite (or because of) the slightly reduced crops. Flavour intensity looks good across the board, with the general standard of Sauvignon Blanc vineyards looking better than last year. Given that the 2004 Highfield Sauvignon Blanc won five gold medals from 5 wine shows entered, this bodes well for the 2005 version.
Pinot noir also looks to have great intensity. Picking at super ripe sugar and flavour levels should lead to a fairly robust wine when it is released in 18 months time”. Winemaker, Alistair Soper.
